FAQ
You might have questions about the process of
obtaining an exam or if it's right for you. We welcome
you to a free consultation (contact us below).
In the mean time, let's see if we can
address some of your concerns.
-
How long does a test take?An NCS/EMG exam will take about an hour. A diagnostic Ultrasound will take about 20 minutes per area. Loose, comfortable clothing, or a change of shorts or a t-shirt can make the process easier. LIkewise, we ask that on the day of testing you refrain from wearing any lotion and oils. Bandages or wraps of any sort may need to be removed.
-
Are there any conditions that would prevent me from getting a test?A common misconception is that a pacemaker may be disturbed during a Nerve Conduction Study. Electrical impulses are delivered to interact with your nerves, however, no strong stimulus is applied to any area that will directly interact with your heart, thus no harm will be caused. If you are experiencing symptoms in a swollen limb because of edema or lymphedema, data from the test may be affected. Also, prescription blood thinners like coumadin or warfarin may cause unneccesary bleeding during an EMG. Also, if you have an open wound in a limb that needs to be studied, the doctor may recommend postponing an EMG until some of your symptoms or medication is reduced.
-
Who will perform the test?An EMG is typically performed by Physiatrists, Neurologists, or Physical Therapists. At NeuForm, a board-certified Physical Therapist will utilize their expertise in anatomy and functional medicine to precisely locate and test your nerves and muscles. Then, analyzing the data obtained, they will determine if a pattern of dysfunction exists and will prepare a report that will be shared with your physician for continued care.
-
How do I go about getting a test done? The process is simple if you have a referral from your physician. Simply call us to schedule an appointment in our office. If you don't have a referral, a free consultation can be provided. If you have insurance, contact our office to verify your benefits. This way when you come in, if the doctor determines the need for an exam, one can be performed on the same day.
